How to pick the best AI personal assistant

We are not going to rank other products. We cannot verify what any of them does this week, and a stale claim about somebody else is worse than no page at all. So this is the criteria instead: five questions, our own answers, and how to check every one of them without taking our word for it.

Question one

Does it actually place phone calls?

This one question sorts the category faster than any other, because almost everything else an assistant does is text and this is not. Ask whether it dials a real number, talks to whoever picks up, copes with being put on hold, and rings back when the line is engaged. Then ask what happens when the call does not go to plan, which is most of them.

For Airmond the answer is yes, and it is the middle of the product rather than a feature on the list. They call the restaurant, the airline, the garage and the plumber, and they chase until it is done. They also call you: one of them is ready for you within a couple of minutes of you leaving your number, your first call is whenever you say, and a written recap of everything they heard lands in your inbox right after you hang up.

  • The test to run.Ask for three quotes for something real, by phone. Count the quotes you get back, not the promises.
  • The follow-up question.Who is on the line when it goes wrong? Ours are artificial intelligence and say so on the call, and nobody here picks up pretending to be one.

Question two

Does it remember you across channels?

Something that starts from nothing every session is a tool you operate. An assistant is the thing you do not have to. The question is whether what you said on the phone on Monday is still true in a message on Thursday, and whether it is still true next month without you saying it again.

For Airmond, yes: the same assistant on phone, WhatsApp and email, with one memory behind all three. Your people, your preferences and how you like things said, asked once and kept from then on. Ask the same question of anything you are weighing, and ask it about channels rather than about sessions.

The honest edge of that answer: SMS and Slack are not built here. They are marked as coming rather than listed as if they worked, because a channel you cannot actually reach somebody on is the exact thing a page like this exists not to do.

  • The test to run.Tell it something on one channel. Ask about it on a different one, a day later, and see whether you have to explain again.
  • What to watch for.A memory that only lives in one app is a memory you will end up maintaining. That is work, not help.

Question three

What is it allowed to write, and where?

Reading your calendar and your mail is the easy half. What decides whether an assistant saves you anything is what it may WRITE, because one that can only suggest leaves every piece of the work exactly where it was.

For Airmond: they read your calendar, your mail and your files, and they write in exactly three places. An event on your calendar, a draft in your own mailbox, and documents they create. What they can reach is a property of the permission we ask Google and Microsoft for rather than a policy we promise to keep, and that is worth reading carefully for any product, not just this one. On your calendar the scope lets an assistant create, edit or delete any event on it; only ever adding a meeting you asked for, with you as the organiser, is our own restriction, checked in our code before anything is written.

The two newest writes are Google only and they are limited by different things, which is the distinction to look for anywhere. Nothing we build sends mail from your mailbox, and since Google has no draft-only permission the one we ask for would allow it, so that limit is ours rather than Google's. The Drive permission is the reverse: it reaches nothing but the files an assistant made there, whatever we do, so filing something for you can never become editing everything you own.

Question four

Where does the data live, and who can reach it?

Ask for the map rather than the adjective. Named countries, named providers, and a straight answer about which of the company's own staff can look at your account. Anything answered with the phrase trusted partners has not been answered.

For Airmond: your profile, tasks, messages and call notes sit in Postgres in Ireland and Frankfurt. Call audio and transcripts are processed and stored by ElevenLabs, our voice provider, in the United States, because European voice residency is one of their enterprise features and we are not on it today. We do not have a date to promise for that and are not going to pretend we do. A small Airmond team can also reach member data through an internal admin tool, because that is how the service gets run and how a call that went wrong gets looked into.

The two things we say we will not do are short on purpose: we do not sell your data, and we do not share it for marketing. A longer list would make a better sales page and a worse promise, and a company that offers you a long one has told you something about how carefully it was checked.

Question five

What does it cost, and what does it meter?

Two prices matter and usually only one of them is on the pricing page. The first is the monthly number. The second is what happens when you actually use it: a message allowance, a token bill, a per-minute charge on calls, or a seat you have to add before somebody else can help.

Airmond is $999 a month after a free week, and we do not take a card to start the week, so nothing turns into a charge while you are not looking. One price, no usage meter and no task count, nothing extra to buy for your chief of staff. If you ever needed more hands than one assistant has, that is a second assistant rather than a bigger bill on the first.

  • The test to run.Read the pricing page looking only for the second price. Tokens, minutes, message caps, seats, overage.
  • What to ask directly. What happens on the heaviest week I could have? A product with no answer to that has a meter it has not shown you.

Where we are not it

When the best AI personal assistant is not this one

Worth saying plainly, because a roundup where the author wins every row is not a roundup, it is an advert with a table in it.

If you want something you can operate, tune and build on, this is the wrong product. There are no prompts to write, no settings to tune and no dashboard to learn, and that is deliberate rather than unfinished. If you need somebody physically in a room, or a named person a regulator or a counterparty can hold to a decision, hire a person instead. And if $999 a month is not obviously worth it against the hours you would get back, then it is not, and a free week will tell you that faster than this page can.

  • They will not guess. When they do not have what they need they ask you once, in the same place you were already talking, and then get on with it.
  • They will not pretend to be a person.Every Airmond assistant is artificial intelligence, with a name and a voice of their own, and nobody here is on a call pretending to be one.
  • They are not an engineer, a marketer or an accountant. When work needs one of those they say so and hand it over rather than having a go at it.
  • They are not something you operate. No prompts to write, no settings to tune, no dashboard to learn. If you can take a phone call, you are already working with them.

The scorecard

The questions, our answers, and how to check them

Take the right-hand column to whatever you are weighing, including us. Every line in it is something you can test in an afternoon rather than something you have to believe. Nothing in this table is a claim about another product, because we cannot verify one and would rather not guess in public.

Questions people ask about this

What makes the best AI personal assistant?

Five things, in this order. Whether it places real phone calls rather than only writing text. Whether it remembers you across channels instead of starting fresh every session. What it is allowed to write, and where, because one that can only suggest leaves the work with you. Where the data lives and which of the company's staff can reach it. And what it actually costs once you use it heavily, which is usually a different number from the one on the pricing page.

Can an AI personal assistant make phone calls?

Some can and most of the category is text. It is the fastest way to sort products, so ask specifically: does it dial a real number, talk to whoever answers, wait on hold, and call back when the line is engaged? Airmond assistants do all four, and it is the middle of the product rather than an extra. They also call you, once one of them is ready for you, which takes a couple of minutes after you leave your number and happens whenever you say.

Is it safe to give an AI assistant my inbox?

Judge that on specifics rather than on adjectives. Read the consent screen before you accept it, and see whether the company tells you which of its own staff can reach your account. For Airmond: they read your calendar, mail and files, and they write in exactly three places, an event on your calendar, a draft in your own mailbox, and documents they create. Nothing we build sends from your mailbox. Account data sits in Ireland and Frankfurt, and call audio sits with our voice provider in the United States.

What does the best AI personal assistant cost?

The range in this category is wide because the products are doing very different amounts of work, so compare on what is metered rather than on the headline. Airmond is $999 a month after a free week, with no card taken to start the week, no usage meter and no task count. One price, and if you needed more hands than one assistant has, that is a second assistant rather than a bigger bill on the first.

Why does this page not rank other AI assistants?

Because we could not keep it true. This category ships weekly, we cannot verify what a competitor does today, and a stale claim about somebody else's product would be both unfair to them and a reason for you to stop believing the paragraphs about ours. The criteria above are more useful anyway: they work on products that did not exist when this page was written, including whichever one you end up choosing.

Take the five questions to whatever you are weighing, including us.

They're ready when you are.

Your assistant is a couple of minutes away.

It is what they will call you on that first call.

Example: +1 415 555 0123

One of our assistants is ready within a couple of minutes. Your first call is whenever you say: nothing to install, nothing to configure. A recap lands in your inbox right after.
